Transplanted: Kitchen herbs with a pet #2

You might ask, how do you have kitchen herbs and a pet all at the same time? Maybe I am crazy and think the plant is a pet. Some of my plants I likely take care of more than my animals. If you read my post on Muscovy ducks….they just exist as God made them and I do little. No I am talking about the Back to the Roots Aquaponics fish tank.

Meet Bubbles, my kids first fish…that they remember

I have eyed this tank for years. I discovered it 5 years ago when we last had fish (my oldest is 6 so he does not remember). The one I bought was 10 years old because the betta coupon inside expired in 2014! 10 years ago the set came with 2 packs of seeds, wheat grass and radishes. The wheat grass did not germinate at all, but the radishes have a couple viable sprouts. We planted additional wheat grass, chives, and some basil. Now to figure out how to use wheat grass.

Initial impressions, I think this set up will be useful. Updates will be given in the transplanted series to see key much it is contributing to our meals. In the mean time the kids have a chore that they rotate performing to feed bubbles. He seems happy and the water is staying clear. As of last week when I left home on travel the plants were getting some decent growth!

Top left going clockwise: Basil, wheat grass, chive, radish (10 year old seeds), and the not sprouting wheat grass (10 year old seeds)

Next week I will be home and give an update on the raised bed garden, what we possible managed to get germinated and if I may have to resort to store bought garden plants. My seed starting project with the children could be more lessons learned through trying and failing! Event transplanted, do not stop learning and do not be afraid to fail.
