Why We Homestead

We are a family on an incredible journey! We seek to live a healthy lifestyle by homesteading! We started out on a small lot inside city limits of Virginia Beach, had a short 2 year stay on 3 acres in Chesapeake and now we have expanding to the vast 10 acre in the country! Join us as we share lessons learned since we started this journey in 2015.

Muscovy ducks on the homestead

Years ago, my wife was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and was placed on medication that not only conflicted with her job, but also had terrible side effects. Our solution was to get to the root of the problem by looking at the food we eat on a daily basis! It turns out, cutting out processed food resulted in no need for the medicine! Not only did this new way of eating help her, my own high cholesterol (that I had been controlling with medicine since high school) reduced to no longer needing any medicine!

Thus, the door was opened for many more questions! What we are putting in our bodies? What do the labels actually mean at grocery stores? Where does our food come from? Why are the healthy options so much more expensive? Can we reconnect with the land and produce it ourselves? Can we reduce the cost? How can we be better stewards of the land God has provided for our family? Is this standard American yard the correct way?

Our family has since grown and we have 2 very young boys.  Adding children into the equation made our day to day decisions about our health more of a priority! We expanded into what products we use to clean our home and how we can treat regular symptoms with plants. The lifestyle transition of holistic approaches to medicine by using essential oils and essential oil infused products was completely eye opening. From removing toxic cleaners, processing our own meat, cloth diapers, composting, and just getting our hands dirty we have ventured on this road to change and have seen amazing results!

My wife and I have gone through many transitions over the years. We went from full time service in the Navy with multiple deployments, to a growing family of 3 with my wife leaving the Navy before our youngest son was born. We are now in our third home and still extremely busy.  We try to find options to reduce the workload, and even though they may not always work… we understand that any time spent together makes it worthwhile.

This blog is to give practical life lessons from an average couple with a few years experience. How to get started even if you are working full time, live in the city, in an apartment, or looking to get more out of your property.  I research a lot! I have read many books, forms, blogs, and watched how-to videos but there is a point where hands-on experience is necessary to grow!

We have seen the effects in our own health and the health of our babies and wish to share what we have learned to help you! Pick something large or small and start homesteading today!
